Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that is marked by a consistent pattern of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity, which can significantly impact daily life.

In Australia, about 5-7.5% of children (around 560,000) and 2-6% of adults are affected. It's interesting to note that boys are diagnosed more often (12.9%) than girls (5.6%), although the rates appear to even out in adults (AIHW, 2023).

At Pivot Point Psychology, our psychology clinic offers tailored, evidence-based support.

Medicare rebates may be available for up to 10 sessions annually, and telehealth supports rural clients.

Important Notice

Please be aware that our psychologists are not medical practitioners and cannot prescribe medication for ADHD or any other condition.

The psychologists at Pivot Point Psychology are registered mental health professionals dedicated to providing evidence-based psychological support, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), to enhance your mental and emotional well-being, including strategies for managing ADHD.

If you are seeking medication for ADHD, you will need to consult a GP to obtain a referral to a psychiatrist. We can work collaboratively with your GP or psychiatrist to support a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs, combining psychological strategies with medical care where appropriate.

Anxiety can feel like an overwhelming bundle of worry, fear, or apprehension that shows up both in our bodies (think racing heart, sweating) and in our minds (like those persistent, intrusive thoughts). If these feelings stick around for a long time, they might indicate a more serious disorder.

In Australia, approximately 16.8% of adults- or about 4.3 million people- experience anxiety every year (ABS, 2020-21). This can be made worse by our fast-paced lives, economic pressures, and the common “she’ll be right” attitude that often keeps people from seeking help.

Anxiety can take a toll on work, relationships, and overall health, with 1 in 4 employees reporting lower productivity (Beyond Blue, 2023). In rural and Indigenous communities, accessing specialist care can be a challenge, although telehealth options provide some much-needed support.

Types of Anxiety Disorders:

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Chronic worry about daily issues.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Fear of social scrutiny.
  • Panic Disorder: Sudden panic attacks.
  • Specific Phobias: Fear of specific objects/situations.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Intrusive thoughts and compulsions.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Trauma-related symptoms.

Treatment Options:

At Pivot Point Psychology, we offer evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to reframe negative thoughts and Mindfulness-Based Therapies to alleviate physical symptoms.

Medicare rebates might be available for up to 10 sessions annually, and telehealth services offer essential support for those in rural areas.

Depression, also known as Major Depressive Disorder, is a mental health condition that brings about ongoing feelings of sadness or a loss of interest in activities that once brought joy, persisting for at least two weeks and affecting daily life.

In Australia, about 13.1% of adults, which means around 3.6 million people, experience depression each year (ABS, 2020-21). Among young people aged 16-24, the impact is felt even more, with 20% affected (Headspace, 2023).

Signs and Symptoms:

To diagnose depression, the DSM-5 highlights the presence of five or more symptoms over a two-week period. One of these must involve either a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure, and it must significantly impair everyday functioning. Here are some common signs:

  • Persistent sadness or irritability
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Significant changes in weight or appetite
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Recurrent thoughts of suicide or attempts

These symptoms can unfortunately lead to social withdrawal, feelings of hopelessness, and even physical health challenges.

It’s important to note that depression is one of the leading causes of suicide among Australian men aged 15-44.

Medicare rebates might be available for up to 10 sessions annually, and telehealth services offer essential support for those in rural areas.

Stress is something we all face, and when managed well, it can actually inspire us to reach our goals and enhance our performance. However, when stress becomes chronic and intense, it can negatively impact our relationships, work, sleep, energy levels, and overall health.

In Australia, an astonishing 35% of adults report experiencing high stress, with 1 in 4 identifying work as the main culprit (APS, 2022). The demands of life—such as juggling family, finances, parenting, hobbies, and friendships—can sometimes feel like a lot to handle. Significant life changes, like retirement, divorce, becoming a parent, or returning to work, can increase this pressure, with 25% of Australians expressing feelings of anxiety during these transitions (Beyond Blue, 2023). Rural and Indigenous communities often experience additional challenges due to isolation or systemic inequities.

At Pivot Point Psychology, we're here to help! Our psychology clinic provides personalised, evidence-based strategies to help you manage stress, including:-

  • Mindfulness-
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)-
  • Time Management: Helping you prioritise tasks for a healthier work-life balance.-

Addiction affects countless Australians each year, touching lives with its challenging consequences. It’s not just about substances like alcohol, cannabis, methamphetamine, or prescription opioids; behavioural addictions—like gambling, pornography, gaming, shopping, or excessive social media use—can also take hold, especially during times of stress, loss, trauma, or mental health struggles.

In Australia, around 5.1% of adults find themselves engaging in risky drinking, 3.4% use illicit drugs weekly, and 1-2% experience problem gambling (AIHW, 2023).

Addiction often appears when relying on a substance or behaviour feels necessary to cope, but stopping can feel impossible, even with the wish to quit. This silent battle affects men, families, workplaces, and communities, with 40% of those impacted facing co-occurring mental health issues (AIHW, 2023).

At Pivot Point Psychology, we specialise in supporting individuals with their addictions, offering evidence-based strategies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing to help develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Whether you’re dealing with substance dependency or compulsive behaviours, Pivot Point Psychology is here to provide compassionate support as you take steps towards regaining control and rebuilding your life.

Navigating career uncertainty, planning a big change, or adjusting to retirement can feel challenging and may lead to stress and self-doubt.

In Australia, it’s interesting to note that 1 in 3 workers change jobs every three years (ABS, 2023), and about 300,000 people retire each year (ABS, 2021).

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey.

At Pivot Point Psychology, we are dedicated to supporting you through career counselling tailored to your needs, helping to rekindle clarity, confidence, and purpose in your life. Our friendly psychologists employ evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which is effective in managing the anxieties that touch 60% of career changers (APS, 2022), along with Solution-Focused Therapy to enhance your job skills and coping mechanisms.

We’re here to help you address the emotional hurdles brought on by job transitions or retirement, ensuring that we stay aligned with your personal values.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an interactive psychological therapy designed to alleviate psychological stress.

At Pivot Point Psychology, we use EMDR to effectively treat trauma and PTSD, as well as conditions like depression, anxiety, panic attacks, complicated grief, dissociative disorders, pain disorders, body dysmorphic disorders, eating disorders, phobias, performance anxiety, stress, and distressing memories.

In Australia, 6.4% of adults experience PTSD, with higher rates among Indigenous communities (AIHW, 2023).

How EMDR Works

EMDR involves eight phases, guided by a trained psychologist. Clients recall distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, which helps reprocess traumatic experiences. This reduces the emotional intensity of memories, enabling healthier coping.

Sessions last 60-90 minutes, with progress varying by individual. EMDR is evidence-based, reducing symptoms in 80% of PTSD clients (RANZCP, 2021).

Whether facing trauma or anxiety, Pivot Point Psychology offers tailored EMDR therapy to help you heal and thrive. Contact us to start your journey.

Grief is a complex blend of emotional, physical, and cognitive responses we experience after a loss, whether it's the passing of someone we hold dear, the end of a relationship, or major life changes like losing a job.

In Australia, about 1 in 5 adults grapple with significant grief each year, with around 10% going on to develop prolonged grief disorder (AIHW, 2023).

Grief can have a profound impact on our health and relationships, with 40% of those who grieve facing mental health challenges (Beyond Blue, 2023). Meanwhile, Indigenous Australians and young people, particularly those aged 15-24, encounter unique hardships due to historical trauma and social pressures (Headspace, 2023).
